Bob Costas on the art of the interview, talking to presidents

NBC’s Bob Costas joined the show to talk about a wide variety of topics. Here are some of his takes:

— Costas talked about asking the tough questions. He said once he grilled former N.C. State coach Jim Valvano was a friend who was hurt when Costas asked him some tough questions about an investigation.

— Costas said that the Bobby Valentine interview on NBS Sports Network was very tough for him.

Costas said that he interviewed six presidents. And several candidates, including George McGovern, who he admired very much. He talked about some of the questions he’d like to ask presidents … starting with who their true boyhood sports heroes are.

— Costas think there has to be a tipping point of when Josh Hamilton won’t be worth it. There’s just so far a team can go.

Costas said look at the Cardinals. They lost Albert Pujols and did just fine.
