Stan Van Gundy: Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant can co-exist successfully

NBC Sports Network analyst Stan Van Gundy joined the show to talk about the big stories in the NBA.

Van Gundy weighed in on Dwight Howard’s role with the Lakers. Van Gundy thinks Howard will never be the main guy in L.A. with Kobe Bryant there. “Kobe is the quintessential alpha dog. He has this great confidence no matter who’s out there, he’s the best player on the floor and he can take over any game.”

But Van Gundy thinks that Howard can share top billing by focusing on defense and rebounding. “He should absolutely dominate those areas,” Van Gundy said. “If those two guys can come to a mutual respect that they’re both equally important in different ways, it can certainly work.”

Van Gundy said that Howard does have an ego, but that’s a good thing for an NBA star. “On the court you better have an ego,” Van Gundy said. He said if he focuses on the right things, it can work with Kobe.

Van Gundy also weighed in on the Spurs and Thunder and why we don’t focus on them as much as other teams. He thinks it has to do with their markets. He said that if San Antonio or OKC were in New York, they’d be the most-talked about teams.
