Jim Leyland explains why pitchers can’t get Miguel Cabrera out

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland joined the show to talk about managing the All-Star Game and more.

Dan asked if he would manage differently if homefield advantage in the World Series was at stake. “You’d make more of an effort to get every player in if you could,” Leyland said. “It’d be more of a casual atmosphere and a showcase.”

Leyland said he didn’t think that six weeks was enough time to merit an All-Star appearance for Yasiel Puig.

Leyland also talked about Miguel Cabrera’s success. He wouldn’t tell Dan how to get Cabrera out but acknowledged it’s not easy. “I don’t think there’s one way,” Leyland said. “I don’t truly think there’s any way to pitch him. You might think there’s a hole here and there. But he’s so smart.”

Leyland talked about the dilemma of managing during a no-hitter. He said he’s never pulled a guy, but the pitch count makes him nervous.
