Rays’ Joe Maddon on why Miguel Cabrera is special, encouraging craziness in clubhouse

Tampa Rays manager Joe Maddon joined the show to talk about his team and some of the other big storylines around baseball.

Maddon talked about his admiration for the Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera. “He’s different in the sense he’s so willing to hit a single to right field to drive in a run,” Maddon said. “His line to line ability is kind of unparallelled. There’s no holes. You never have them.”

Maddon also had praise for Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig.  “He’s another guy as a hitter who will utilize the opposite field,” Maddon said. He said it’s fair to make comparisons to Bo Jackson and thinks that Puig has a great future.

Maddon talked about his managerial style and encouraging “crazy” behavior.  “There’s so much pressure heaped on players on a daily basis,” Maddon said. “Why would I want to make it worse.” Maddon thinks “slight craziness” wins.

Maddon talked about how the game shouldn’t have all the unwritten rules with bean balls.
