Warren Sapp says he’d pay fine for defenders who hit guys over middle

NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp joined the show to talk about the big stories around the League and more.

Dan asked Sapp how a defense can counter the Broncos offense. “The book on Peyton Manning has never changed,” Sapp said. “Rush and get him off the spot. Don’t let him get comfortable.” But Sapp said even without injured LT Ryan Clady that seems impossible. He said it looks like Anthony Munoz is blocking him.

Sapp said the key for defenses is to protect the middle of the field. Defenses need the safety to hit guys — even if it draws a fine. Sapp said he’d donate $5,000 to anyone who got a fine for a hit over the middle.

Sapp said that the read option has been de-emphasized because the defense can hit the quarterback and coaches will never expose their “$50 million quarterbacks.” Sapp said the NFL put the read option out of business.
