Tucker: NFL may not be as ready for gay player as we thought

NFL analyst Ross Tucker joined the show to talk about Michael Sam not making the Rams.

Tucker said the media isn’t necessarily to blame for making Sam big news — because it was big news. “That’s huge news and he knew that,” Tucker said. “He wanted it to be huge news.”

Tucker said, however, that he’s gotten a lot of feedback that ESPN’s coverage did hurt Sam.

Tucker agrees with Dan that Sam was hurt by being drafted by the Rams. He said that was the wrong roster and he might have had a better chance if he wasn’t drafted and could have signed elsewhere.

Tucker said that if he doesn’t get picked up, it shows the NFL isn’t as ready for an openly gay player as we might have thought.

Tucker said that if Sam was in the closet, he’d be on a practice squad. And that the next gay player probably won’t say anything.
