John McEnroe says Tennis needs to shed country club image

John McEnroe joined the show to talk about a wide range of topics, including his friendship with Keith Richards, how much he plays guitar, seeing concerts when he was playing (like the Clash when he was at Wimbledon in 1979), the highs and lows of collecting modern art and his rebel image and how it fit in with music and art.

McEnroe said that he is proud of the rebel image he brought to tennis. He said “I was bringing to the table what the sport needs.” He thinks the sport is perceived as a country club sport and it needs to be brought to the masses.

McEnroe is playing in a tournament without judges. McEnroe thinks that players should make their own calls on the court. “It’s the rare sport when you really don’t need anyone but the players,” McEnroe said.
