Marlins manager Don Mattingly explained why they hired Barry Bonds to be a hitting coach.

“Once we interviewed,” said Mattingly, “I knew Barry was in the right spot. Because he talked about teaching. … We never had any doubt about his baseball knowledge.”

Mattingly said he had only one reservation: “The biggest question was, do you understand the time? … There’s a lot going on as a hitting coach.”

Mattingly said he thinks the storyline about Bonds beating his players in a home run hitting contest was overblown.
